Hello!

We are Nate and Michelle from Hampton Roads, VA. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us.

Even though we don't know you yet, we have a huge amount of respect and admiration for you! We cannot truly understand everything you are going through, but please know that we offer our sincere support and prayers to you. We can only try to understand the difficult decisions that lie ahead of you.

The fact that you are here, reading this, shows that the plan you are making is being made out of love, courage, and selflessness, and that you are trying to make the best decision for your child. We hope that by looking at our photos and reading about our lives that you will find comfort in knowing how much we want to give our unconditional love and acceptance to both you and your child. We hope and pray that you find the perfect, loving family for your child!

Why We Are Adopting

Since we were kids, we have both wanted to have a large family (about 5 kids), and we've both always wanted to "make" one or two of those kids and to adopt the rest, so once we were married we got to work trying to make some babies!

Because of some fertility problems that we found out we had, it took a long time, a lot of effort, and a lot of prayers before we finally got pregnant with our biological son, Parker. Since his birth in 2015, we've tried to get pregnant again without success, so now we are free to pursue our dream of adoption.

We believe that adoption is a beautiful gift from God to the child, the birth parents, and the adoptive parents. In fact, adoption is precisely what Christian faith is all about: the Bible says that each of us is cut off from God because of the wrong things that we do, but that God will adopt us as his children and bring us to live with Him in Heaven when we die if we accept the forgiveness that His son, Jesus Christ, offers us. We're so glad that God wanted to adopt us, and we're eager to respond in kind by adopting children who can't stay with their birth parents.

Our Story

We met each other at a church event in 2001: Michelle was a professional nanny for a family, and Nate had just graduated from college and gotten a new job. Michelle was almost immediately smitten, but it took Nate about two years to notice her attention - whoops! We dated for about six months, but neither of us was mature enough for marriage, so we broke up. THE END?!

Thankfully NOT! Michelle moved to India for about 5 years to work with orphans and street-children, and Nate remained in the States to work and mentor other men in his church. When Michelle came back to the USA for a break, we reconnected and got to know each other (again), and when she left again for India a few weeks later, Nate knew that he loved Michelle and wanted to marry her - and he desperately hoped that she felt the same way!

Thankfully, she did! Michelle came back to the USA in January 2009 so that Nate could pursue her romantically. We got engaged in September 2009, and were married in January 2010.

Our Faith

We are both Christians and we will raise our children in our faith. We want our children to know that God has a wonderful plan for their lives, and we want to help them learn how to be followers of Jesus Christ. We want to teach our children that God loves them unconditionally, and that we love them unconditionally, as well.

Our faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation on which we live our lives, and we hope to be positive role models for our children by teaching them to be kind and to respect others. We want our relationship with our children to be strong and open, and we want them to feel comfortable coming to us with any questions, problems, concerns, or worries that they may have. We will always be there for them, no matter what, and will always give them our unconditional love and support.

Nate Talks About Michelle

"Michelle is a tender-hearted, funny, spunky, detail-oriented woman who drives me crazy in all the right ways! I appreciate that she loves God first and me second, and that she strives to please Him in everything that she does.

"Michelle is weak in areas where I am strong, and strong in areas where I am weak, making her a wonderful match for me (and me for her)! I'm so attracted to and thankful for her love of children and desire to nurture them; her natural tendency to serve others in the background, without credit and with a great attitude; her desire and willingness to change for the better; and her great patience with me and the various ways that I tend to irritate her - she's a saint!

"(She's also really pretty and I adore her, so that's super nice, too!)"

Michelle’s Likes

Growing up I always loved singing, and I take great joy in being able to be a part of a local symphony chorus as well as singing at church on a regular basis. Music is a big part of our everyday life! I also love to be creative in the kitchen, making healthy and delicious dishes for our family and for others. I enjoy going to the gym to workout, hiking when possible, and spending time with friends.

My relationship with God is very important to me and I am regularly involved in a women's Bible study at church. I want to be a faithful and loving wife and mom and I know I can't do that without God's help and guidance.

Michelle as Stay-At-Home Mom

When we got married I knew that, if possible, I wanted to be a stay at home mom when we had kids. Thankfully, when we had Parker, it was feasible for me to stay at home. It really is a gift, one I hope not to take for granted. I love being with our son; helping him as he learns and grows, teaching him to explore the beautiful creation God has made, and encouraging him to try new things.

We often get together with friends for outings to parks, museums, & the zoo. Once a week I hold a "class" at our house, called "Mornings with Miss Michelle": four other children join us for crafts, creative play, songs, and activities.

Michelle Talks About Nate

"I was struck by his loving relationship with God and his fun, enthusiastic demeanor. 17 years later, these things are still evident, and he cares for our family in such a tender and sacrificial way. He loves me, respects me, makes me smile and laugh, and I love our life together. He's my best friend and I love him more each day.

"Nate is smart, humble, light-hearted, and funny; telling some pretty impressive 'dad jokes'. Cheesy as they may be, I really do love them. He is steady and calm in the midst of difficulty and I find great comfort in knowing that he is trusting God whether life is easy or hard. I love watching him be a dad and I know he loves the gift of being a father. He's one of the dads our friends' kids all flock to because he's always doing something fun like having a water balloon fight, doing canon ball contests in the pool, or playing games."

Nate’s Likes

First, I enjoy spending time doing pretty much anything with Michelle and Parker - since I was a kid, my heart's desire has been to be a Husband and Dad.

More specifically, I'm a bit of a nerd - hopefully in a good way! I like to read (mainly sci-fi and fantasy, sometimes biographies or current events), and often listen to audiobooks when I'm doing something else. I like to play immersive, story-driven video games or strategy games.

I'm also learning carpentry, and learning how to do various repairs around the house. I like to take our family camping, and I love super-cheesy dad jokes and terrible puns - Michelle hears the same jokes over and over when I tell them to new friends, and she (usually) plays along! I'm also a big fan of great TV shows and movies like the Chef's Table, Star Trek, Star Wars, The Office, Parks & Recreation, Battlestar Galactica, and The Expanse.

Oh, and I LOVE pizza! My ideal evening is playing games with my family and some friends while we eat pizza and drink Coke Zero (gotta watch my figure, you know)!

Nate as Work-from-Home Dad

We love the fact that Nate almost always works from home! He works as a computer security expert and only occasionally has to travel for his job - most days he works from our house and hangs out with Michelle and Parker for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and random playtimes and chore-times throughout the day. Nate is a hard worker and is very successful in his career, and he provides our family with a comfortable lifestyle so that Michelle can be home each day with Parker. He has formed strong friendships at work and is well respected by his employers and co-workers. He really enjoys his job and hopes to stay with his current company for the rest of his career.

Parker

Our biological son, Parker, is 3 years old. He was born prematurely, but is doing just fine now. Parker loves trains, fire trucks, ambulances really, anything with wheels! He is creative and has an active imagination, using his stuffed animals as characters in his play time. He spends hours digging in the dirt or sand and, if we were to let him, he would probably live outdoors! Parker LOVES to read and we spend a lot of time reading a variety of books. One of our favorite books to read together is called "Dragons Love Tacos" - it's as funny as the title sounds!

Parker loves other children and will be a fantastic brother. When he's around babies he'll get down on the floor next to them and talk sweetly to them and smile. He's gentle and tender-hearted and he loves to bring treats to his friends. He loves snuggles, tickles, doing crafts, wrestling with dad, helping to cook or bake in the kitchen, and helping Dad do projects in his workshop.

Our Home

We live in a single-family home in a quiet, safe, well-kept neighborhood with wonderful neighbors who have become our friends. There are several parks and other fun activities nearby, and good public and private schools available to us. We like living in the suburbs - we're about 20 minutes away from the downtown areas so we can enjoy all the attractions they offer, and just a short drive from the country so we can go enjoy nature.

Family

Family is tremendously important to us, and we make efforts to remain involved with our extended families (parents, siblings, cousins, etc.).

Nate has one sister who lives very close by with her husband and two young kids, and his parents live nearby, as well - we usually see them at least once per week, and Parker sometimes has awesome sleepovers with his local grandparents that he really looks forward to.

Michelle’s parents live in the Mid-West near one of her two sisters (and her husband and kids); another sister lives in the South (with husband and kid); and her brother lives nearby. We usually take an annual road trip out to see everyone and always have a great time!

Holidays & Traditions

Most holidays are big family events for us, and we love celebrating them together. We have some fun traditions associated with different holidays.

A few examples:

  • Halloween: we set up tables in our front yard and give out s'mores and hot apple cider to all the trick-or-treaters and their families - this makes our house the hang out spot in the neighborhood that night.

  • Christmas Eve: our whole family gets together for early dinner, we attend our church's candlelight service together, and then open one gift each before bed (usually its super-ugly pajamas that Michelle got for everyone).

  • Christmas Day: we make Eggs Benedict and homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast, then head to Nates parents house for dinner and gift-giving.

  • Independence Day (July 4): we make root beer floats for BREAKFAST!

Things We Like to Do Together

Church: We are very active in our local church - we lead a Care Group at our church, Michelle sings, Nate does tech stuff, and both of us serve on a leadership team. Parker loves to sing songs, learn Bible stories, and play with his many friends there.

Friends: Many friends are like family to us and we spend lots of time with them: game night, camping trips, just hanging out. A fun example: during a recent blizzard, friends came to our house so that they would get snowed in with us - we spent 3+ days making snowmen, drinking hot chocolate, watching movies, and playing games!

Beach & Camping: Each week in the summer Michelle takes Parker to hang with other moms and kids at VA Beach for the day, and in September our whole family rents a beach cottage for a week. We also like to camp.

Road Trips and Local Attractions: We take several trips together each year, sometimes to places we know (like to visit Michelle's family out West), and sometimes to explore new places (for example, we recently drove out to western VA for a random apple festival that we heard about - it just sounded like fun). Around here, we like to go to museums and other local attractions; for example, Parker really likes going to the Children's Museum, the Zoo, and the Aquarium.

Swimming and Grilling: We have a large swimming pool in our backyard, and we spend a lot of our time during the summer swimming in it or playing by it. Nate will often grill some burgers or chicken for dinner, and we love to have family and friends over for pool parties and cook outs.
